Wisdom 4:7-15
[7] But the righteous man, though he die early, will be at rest.
[8] For old age is not honored for length of time,
nor measured by number of years;
[9] but understanding is gray hair for men,
and a blameless life is ripe old age.
[10] There was one who pleased God and was loved by him,
and while living among sinners he was taken up.
[11] He was caught up lest evil change his understanding
or guile deceive his soul.
[12] For the fascination of wickedness obscures what is good,
and roving desire perverts the innocent mind.
[13] Being perfected in a short time, he fulfilled long years;
[14] for his soul was pleasing to the Lord,
therefore he took him quickly from the midst of wickedness.
[15] Yet the peoples saw and did not understand,
nor take such a thing to heart,
that God’s grace and mercy are with his elect,
and he watches over his holy ones.
Isaiah 12:1-6
[1] You will say in that day:
“I will give thanks to thee, O LORD,
for though thou wast angry with me,
thy anger turned away,
and thou didst comfort me.
[2] “Behold, God is my salvation;
I will trust, and will not be afraid;
for the LORD GOD is my strength and my song,
and he has become my salvation.”
[3] With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.
[4] And you will say in that day: “Give thanks to the LORD,
call upon his name;
make known his deeds among the nations,
proclaim that his name is exalted.
[5] “Sing praises to the LORD, for he has done gloriously;
let this be known in all the earth.
[6] Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion,
for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.”
I John 5:1-6
[1] Every one who believes that Jesus is the Christ is a child of God, and every one who loves the parent loves the child.
[2] By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments.
[3] For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.
[4] For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that overcomes the world, our faith.
[5] Who is it that overcomes the world but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
[6] This is he who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood.
Luke 9:23-27
[23] And he said to all, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
[24] For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake, he will save it.
[25] For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?
[26] For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
[27] But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”
