Proverbs 20:6-22
[6] Many a man proclaims his own loyalty,
but a faithful man who can find?
[7] A righteous man who walks in his integrity —
blessed are his sons after him!
[8] A king who sits on the throne of judgment
winnows all evil with his eyes.
[9] Who can say, “I have made my heart clean;
I am pure from my sin”?
[10] Diverse weights and diverse measures
are both alike an abomination to the LORD.
[11] Even a child makes himself known by his acts,
whether what he does is pure and right.
[12] The hearing ear and the seeing eye,
the LORD has made them both.
[13] Love not sleep, lest you come to poverty;
open your eyes, and you will have plenty of bread.
[14] “It is bad, it is bad,” says the buyer;
but when he goes away, then he boasts.
[15] There is gold, and abundance of costly stones;
but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
[16] Take a man’s garment when he has given surety for a stranger,
and hold him in pledge when he gives surety for foreigners.
[17] Bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man,
but afterward his mouth will be full of gravel.
[18] Plans are established by counsel;
by wise guidance wage war.
[19] He who goes about gossiping reveals secrets;
therefore do not associate with one who speaks foolishly.
[20] If one curses his father or his mother,
his lamp will be put out in utter darkness.
[21] An inheritance gotten hastily in the beginning
will in the end not be blessed.
[22] Do not say, “I will repay evil”;
wait for the LORD, and he will help you.
Baruch 4:21-24
[21] “Take courage, my children, cry to God,
and he will deliver you from the power and hand of the enemy.
[22] For I have put my hope in the Everlasting to save you,
and joy has come to me from the Holy One,
because of the mercy which soon will come to you
from your everlasting Savior.
[23] For I sent you out with sorrow and weeping,
but God will give you back to me with joy
and gladness for ever.
[24] For as the neighbors of Zion have now seen your capture,
so they soon will see your salvation by God,
which will come to you with great glory
and with the splendor of the Everlasting.
II Corinthians 4:1-11
[1] Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart.
[2] We have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways; we refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.
[3] And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing.
[4] In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the likeness of God.
[5] For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.
[6] For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.
[7] But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us.
[8] We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair;
[9] persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;
[10] always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.
[11] For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh.
John 9:39-10:10
[39] Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind.”
[40] Some of the Pharisees near him heard this, and they said to him, “Are we also blind?”
[41] Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, `We see,’ your guilt remains.
Chapter 10
[1] “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber;
[2] but he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
[3] To him the gatekeeper opens; the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
[4] When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.
[5] A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”
[6] This figure Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.
[7] So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.
[8] All who came before me are thieves and robbers; but the sheep did not heed them.
[9] I am the door; if any one enters by me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.
[10] The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
