Luke 4:42-5:11
[42] And when it was day he departed and went into a lonely place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them;
[43] but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also; for I was sent for this purpose.”
[44] And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
Chapter 5
[1] While the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennes’aret.
[2] And he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.
[3] Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat.
[4] And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
[5] And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.”
[6] And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking,
[7] they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.
[8] But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”
[9] For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken;
[10] and so also were James and John, sons of Zeb’edee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men.”
[11] And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
Acts 7:30-8:2
[30] “Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.
[31] When Moses saw it he wondered at the sight; and as he drew near to look, the voice of the Lord came,
[32] `I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.’ And Moses trembled and did not dare to look.
[33] And the Lord said to him, `Take off the shoes from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.
[34] I have surely seen the ill-treatment of my people that are in Egypt and heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.’
[35] “This Moses whom they refused, saying, `Who made you a ruler and a judge?’ God sent as both ruler and deliverer by the hand of the angel that appeared to him in the bush.
[36] He led them out, having performed wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.
[37] This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, `God will raise up for you a prophet from your brethren as he raised me up.’
[38] This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers; and he received living oracles to give to us.
[39] Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt,
[40] saying to Aaron, `Make for us gods to go before us; as for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’
[41] And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and rejoiced in the works of their hands.
[42] But God turned and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: `Did you offer to me slain beasts and sacrifices,
forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
[43] And you took up the tent of Moloch,
and the star of the god Rephan,
the figures which you made to worship;
and I will remove you beyond Babylon.’
[44] “Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, even as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen.
[45] Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations which God thrust out before our fathers. So it was until the days of David,
[46] who found favor in the sight of God and asked leave to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.
[47] But it was Solomon who built a house for him.
[48] Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made with hands; as the prophet says,
[49] `Heaven is my throne,
and earth my footstool.
What house will you build for me, says the Lord,
or what is the place of my rest?
[50] Did not my hand make all these things?’
[51] “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.
[52] Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered,
[53] you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.”
[54] Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth against him.
[55] But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God;
[56] and he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God.”
[57] But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together upon him.
[58] Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him; and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.
[59] And as they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
[60] And he knelt down and cried with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
Chapter 8
[1] And Saul was consenting to his death.
And on that day a great persecution arose against the church in Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the region of Judea and Sama’ria, except the apostles.
[2] Devout men buried Stephen, and made great lamentation over him.
James 4:7-17
[7] Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
[8] Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you men of double mind.
[9] Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to dejection.
[10] Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you.
[11] Do not speak evil against one another, brethren. He that speaks evil against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.
[12] There is one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you that you judge your neighbor?
[13] Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and get gain”;
[14] whereas you do not know about tomorrow. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.
[15] Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and we shall do this or that.”
[16] As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.
[17] Whoever knows what is right to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
John 1:29-34
[29] The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
[30] This is he of whom I said, `After me comes a man who ranks before me, for he was before me.’
[31] I myself did not know him; but for this I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.”
[32] And John bore witness, “I saw the Spirit descend as a dove from heaven, and it remained on him.
[33] I myself did not know him; but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, `He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’
[34] And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”
Matthew 5:1-16
[1] Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down his disciples came to him.
[2] And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
[3] “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
[4] “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
[5] “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
[6] “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
[7] “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
[8] “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
[9] “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
[10] “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
[11] “Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.
[12] Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.
[13] “You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men.
[14] “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid.
[15] Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.
[16] Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Mark 1:21-34
[21] And they went into Caper’na-um; and immediately on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught.
[22] And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
[23] And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit;
[24] and he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.”
[25] But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!”
[26] And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him.
[27] And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching! With authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”
[28] And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.
[29] And immediately he left the synagogue, and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
[30] Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever, and immediately they told him of her.
[31] And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her; and she served them.
[32] That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons.
[33] And the whole city was gathered together about the door.
[34] And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
