Luke 18:35-19:28
[35] As he drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging;
[36] and hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this meant.
[37] They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”
[38] And he cried, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
[39] And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
[40] And Jesus stopped, and commanded him to be brought to him; and when he came near, he asked him,
[41] “What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me receive my sight.”
[42] And Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has made you well.”
[43] And immediately he received his sight and followed him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.
Chapter 19
[1] He entered Jericho and was passing through.
[2] And there was a man named Zacchae’us; he was a chief tax collector, and rich.
[3] And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature.
[4] So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way.
[5] And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchae’us, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today.”
[6] So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully.
[7] And when they saw it they all murmured, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”
[8] And Zacchae’us stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold.”
[9] And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham.
[10] For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost.”
[11] As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.
[12] He said therefore, “A nobleman went into a far country to receive a kingdom and then return.
[13] Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten pounds, and said to them, `Trade with these till I come.’
[14] But his citizens hated him and sent an embassy after him, saying, `We do not want this man to reign over us.’
[15] When he returned, having received the kingdom, he commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by trading.
[16] The first came before him, saying, `Lord, your pound has made ten pounds more.’
[17] And he said to him, `Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.’
[18] And the second came, saying, `Lord, your pound has made five pounds.’
[19] And he said to him, `And you are to be over five cities.’
[20] Then another came, saying, `Lord, here is your pound, which I kept laid away in a napkin;
[21] for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man; you take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.’
[22] He said to him, `I will condemn you out of your own mouth, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?
[23] Why then did you not put my money into the bank, and at my coming I should have collected it with interest?’
[24] And he said to those who stood by, `Take the pound from him, and give it to him who has the ten pounds.’
[25] (And they said to him, `Lord, he has ten pounds!’)
[26] `I tell you, that to every one who has will more be given; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
[27] But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them before me.’”
[28] And when he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
Acts 22:30-23:11
[30] But on the morrow, desiring to know the real reason why the Jews accused him, he unbound him, and commanded the chief priests and all the council to meet, and he brought Paul down and set him before them.
Chapter 23
[1] And Paul, looking intently at the council, said, “Brethren, I have lived before God in all good conscience up to this day.”
[2] And the high priest Anani’as commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.
[3] Then Paul said to him, “God shall strike you, you whitewashed wall! Are you sitting to judge me according to the law, and yet contrary to the law you order me to be struck?”
[4] Those who stood by said, “Would you revile God’s high priest?”
[5] And Paul said, “I did not know, brethren, that he was the high priest; for it is written, `You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’”
[6] But when Paul perceived that one part were Sad’ducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Brethren, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees; with respect to the hope and the resurrection of the dead I am on trial.”
[7] And when he had said this, a dissension arose between the Pharisees and the Sad’ducees; and the assembly was divided.
[8] For the Sad’ducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.
[9] Then a great clamor arose; and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ party stood up and contended, “We find nothing wrong in this man. What if a spirit or an angel spoke to him?”
[10] And when the dissension became violent, the tribune, afraid that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them and bring him into the barracks.
[11] The following night the Lord stood by him and said, “Take courage, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must bear witness also at Rome.”
I John 5:1-12
[1] Every one who believes that Jesus is the Christ is a child of God, and every one who loves the parent loves the child.
[2] By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments.
[3] For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.
[4] For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that overcomes the world, our faith.
[5] Who is it that overcomes the world but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
[6] This is he who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood.
[7] And the Spirit is the witness, because the Spirit is the truth.
[8] There are three witnesses, the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree.
[9] If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has borne witness to his Son.
[10] He who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. He who does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne to his Son.
[11] And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
[12] He who has the Son has life; he who has not the Son of God has not life.
John 11:55-12:11
[55] Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.
[56] They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast?”
[57] Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if any one knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.
Chapter 12
[1] Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Laz’arus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
[2] There they made him a supper; Martha served, and Laz’arus was one of those at table with him.
[3] Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.
[4] But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was to betray him), said,
[5] “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?”
[6] This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put into it.
[7] Jesus said, “Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial.
[8] The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”
[9] When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Laz’arus, whom he had raised from the dead.
[10] So the chief priests planned to put Laz’arus also to death,
[11] because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.
Matthew 20:17-28
[17] And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them,
[18] “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death,
[19] and deliver him to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.”
[20] Then the mother of the sons of Zeb’edee came up to him, with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something.
[21] And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Command that these two sons of mine may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.”
[22] But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.”
[23] He said to them, “You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
[24] And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers.
[25] But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them.
[26] It shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant,
[27] and whoever would be first among you must be your slave;
[28] even as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Mark 10:32-45
[32] And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them; and they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him,
[33] saying, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles;
[34] and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise.”
[35] And James and John, the sons of Zeb’edee, came forward to him, and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.”
[36] And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?”
[37] And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.”
[38] But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?”
[39] And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized;
[40] but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”
[41] And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John.
[42] And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them.
[43] But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant,
[44] and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.
[45] For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
