The Twelve Apostles of Christ,
and St. Paul, the Thirteenth Apostle
Wisdom 9:9-10:2
Exodus 15:23-27
I Thessalonians 2:9-16
Matthew 9:36-10:7
Wisdom 9:9-10:2
[9] With thee is wisdom, who knows thy works
and was present when thou didst make the world,
and who understand what is pleasing in thy sight
and what is right according to thy commandments.
[10] Send her forth from the holy heavens,
and from the throne of thy glory send her,
that she may be with me and toil,
and that I may learn what is pleasing to thee.
[11] For she knows and understands all things,
and she will guide me wisely in my actions
and guard me with her glory.
[12] Then my works will be acceptable,
and I shall judge thy people justly,
and shall be worthy of the throne of my father.
[13] For what man can learn the counsel of God?
Or who can discern what the Lord wills?
[14] For the reasoning of mortals is worthless,
and our designs are likely to fail,
[15] for a perishable body weighs down the soul,
and this earthy tent burdens the thoughtful mind.
[16] We can hardly guess at what is on earth,
and what is at hand we find with labor;
but who has traced out what is in the heavens?
[17] Who has learned thy counsel, unless thou hast given wisdom
and sent thy holy Spirit from on high?
[18] And thus the paths of those on earth were set right,
and men were taught what pleases thee,
and were saved by wisdom.”
Chapter 10
[1] Wisdom protected the first-formed father of the
world, when he alone had been created;
she delivered him from his transgression,
[2] and gave him strength to rule all things.
Exodus 15:23-27
[23] When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter; therefore it was named Marah.
[24] And the people murmured against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?”
[25] And he cried to the LORD; and the LORD showed him a tree, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet.
There the LORD made for them a statute and an ordinance and there he proved them,
[26] saying, “If you will diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give heed to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases upon you which I put upon the Egyptians; for I am the LORD, your healer.”
[27] Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees; and they encamped there by the water.
I Thessalonians 2:9-16
[9] For you remember our labor and toil, brethren; we worked night and day, that we might not burden any of you, while we preached to you the gospel of God.
[10] You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and righteous and blameless was our behavior to you believers;
[11] for you know how, like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you
[12] to lead a life worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.
[13] And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.
[14] For you, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus which are in Judea; for you suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they did from the Jews,
[15] who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out, and displease God and oppose all men
[16] by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they may be saved — so as always to fill up the measure of their sins. But God’s wrath has come upon them at last!
Matthew 9:36-10:7
[36] When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
[37] Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few;
[38] pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
Chapter 10
[1] And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every infirmity.
[2] The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zeb’edee, and John his brother;
[3] Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;
[4] Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
[5] These twelve Jesus sent out, charging them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans,
[6] but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
[7] And preach as you go, saying, `The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
