Tenth Day of Great Lent
Exodus 2:11-22
Joel 2:1-11
Micah 4:1-7
Exodus 2:11-22
[11] One day, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and looked on their burdens; and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people.
[12] He looked this way and that, and seeing no one he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.
[13] When he went out the next day, behold, two Hebrews were struggling together; and he said to the man that did the wrong, “Why do you strike your fellow?”
[14] He answered, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid, and thought, “Surely the thing is known.”
[15] When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses.
But Moses fled from Pharaoh, and stayed in the land of Mid’ian; and he sat down by a well.
[16] Now the priest of Mid’ian had seven daughters; and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.
[17] The shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.
[18] When they came to their father Reu’el, he said, “How is it that you have come so soon today?”
[19] They said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and even drew water for us and watered the flock.”
[20] He said to his daughters, “And where is he? Why have you left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.”
[21] And Moses was content to dwell with the man, and he gave Moses his daughter Zippo’rah.
[22] She bore a son, and he called his name Gershom; for he said, “I have been a sojourner in a foreign land.”
Joel 2:1-11
[1] Blow the trumpet in Zion;
sound the alarm on my holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,
for the day of the LORD is coming, it is near,
[2] a day of darkness and gloom,
a day of clouds and thick darkness!
Like blackness there is spread upon the mountains
a great and powerful people;
their like has never been from of old,
nor will be again after them
through the years of all generations.
[3] Fire devours before them,
and behind them a flame burns.
The land is like the garden of Eden before them,
but after them a desolate wilderness,
and nothing escapes them.
[4] Their appearance is like the appearance of horses,
and like war horses they run.
[5] As with the rumbling of chariots,
they leap on the tops of the mountains,
like the crackling of a flame of fire
devouring the stubble,
like a powerful army
drawn up for battle.
[6] Before them peoples are in anguish,
all faces grow pale.
[7] Like warriors they charge,
like soldiers they scale the wall.
They march each on his way,
they do not swerve from their paths.
[8] They do not jostle one another,
each marches in his path;
they burst through the weapons
and are not halted.
[9] They leap upon the city,
they run upon the walls;
they climb up into the houses,
they enter through the windows like a thief.
[10] The earth quakes before them,
the heavens tremble.
The sun and the moon are darkened,
and the stars withdraw their shining.
[11] The LORD utters his voice
before his army,
for his host is exceedingly great;
he that executes his word is powerful.
For the day of the LORD is great and very terrible;
who can endure it?
Micah 4:1-7
[1] It shall come to pass in the latter days
that the mountain of the house of the LORD
shall be established as the highest of the mountains,
and shall be raised up above the hills;
and peoples shall flow to it,
[2] and many nations shall come, and say:
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,
to the house of the God of Jacob;
that he may teach us his ways
and we may walk in his paths.”
For out of Zion shall go forth the law,
and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
[3] He shall judge between many peoples,
and shall decide for strong nations afar off;
and they shall beat their swords into plowshares,
and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
neither shall they learn war any more;
[4] but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree,
and none shall make them afraid;
for the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken.
[5] For all the peoples walk
each in the name of its god,
but we will walk in the name of the LORD our God
for ever and ever.
[6] In that day, says the LORD,
I will assemble the lame
and gather those who have been driven away,
and those whom I have afflicted;
[7] and the lame I will make the remnant;
and those who were cast off, a strong nation;
and the LORD will reign over them in Mount Zion
from this time forth and for evermore.
