Luke 7:11-35
[11] Soon afterward he went to a city called Na’in, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him.
[12] As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her.
[13] And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.”
[14] And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”
[15] And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother.
[16] Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and “God has visited his people!”
[17] And this report concerning him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country.
[18] The disciples of John told him of all these things.
[19] And John, calling to him two of his disciples, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?”
[20] And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, `Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?’”
[21] In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many that were blind he bestowed sight.
[22] And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them.
[23] And blessed is he who takes no offense at me.”
[24] When the messengers of John had gone, he began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind?
[25] What then did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings’ courts.
[26] What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
[27] This is he of whom it is written, `Behold, I send my messenger before thy face,
who shall prepare thy way before thee.’
[28] I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
[29] (When they heard this all the people and the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John;
[30] but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)
[31] “To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like?
[32] They are like children sitting in the market place and calling to one another, `We piped to you, and you did not dance;
we wailed, and you did not weep.’
[33] For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine; and you say, `He has a demon.’
[34] The Son of man has come eating and drinking; and you say, `Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
[35] Yet wisdom is justified by all her children.”
Acts 10:1-23
[1] At Caesare’a there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian Cohort,
[2] a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms liberally to the people, and prayed constantly to God.
[3] About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, “Cornelius.”
[4] And he stared at him in terror, and said, “What is it, Lord?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God.
[5] And now send men to Joppa, and bring one Simon who is called Peter;
[6] he is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the seaside.”
[7] When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those that waited on him,
[8] and having related everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.
[9] The next day, as they were on their journey and coming near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour.
[10] And he became hungry and desired something to eat; but while they were preparing it, he fell into a trance
[11] and saw the heaven opened, and something descending, like a great sheet, let down by four corners upon the earth.
[12] In it were all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds of the air.
[13] And there came a voice to him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.”
[14] But Peter said, “No, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.”
[15] And the voice came to him again a second time, “What God has cleansed, you must not call common.”
[16] This happened three times, and the thing was taken up at once to heaven.
[17] Now while Peter was inwardly perplexed as to what the vision which he had seen might mean, behold, the men that were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon’s house, stood before the gate
[18] and called out to ask whether Simon who was called Peter was lodging there.
[19] And while Peter was pondering the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are looking for you.
[20] Rise and go down, and accompany them without hesitation; for I have sent them.”
[21] And Peter went down to the men and said, “I am the one you are looking for; what is the reason for your coming?”
[22] And they said, “Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house, and to hear what you have to say.”
[23] So he called them in to be his guests.
The next day he rose and went off with them, and some of the brethren from Joppa accompanied him.
I Peter 2:18-25
[18] Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to the kind and gentle but also to the overbearing.
[19] For one is approved if, mindful of God, he endures pain while suffering unjustly.
[20] For what credit is it, if when you do wrong and are beaten for it you take it patiently? But if when you do right and suffer for it you take it patiently, you have God’s approval.
[21] For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.
[22] He committed no sin; no guile was found on his lips.
[23] When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he trusted to him who judges justly.
[24] He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
[25] For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.
John 3:22-36
[22] After this Jesus and his disciples went into the land of Judea; there he remained with them and baptized.
[23] John also was baptizing at Ae’non near Salim, because there was much water there; and people came and were baptized.
[24] For John had not yet been put in prison.
[25] Now a discussion arose between John’s disciples and a Jew over purifying.
[26] And they came to John, and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you bore witness, here he is, baptizing, and all are going to him.”
[27] John answered, “No one can receive anything except what is given him from heaven.
[28] You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.
[29] He who has the bride is the bridegroom; the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice; therefore this joy of mine is now full.
[30] He must increase, but I must decrease.”
[31] He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth belongs to the earth, and of the earth he speaks; he who comes from heaven is above all.
[32] He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony;
[33] he who receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true.
[34] For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for it is not by measure that he gives the Spirit;
[35] the Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand.
[36] He who believes in the Son has eternal life; he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God rests upon him.
Matthew 9:18-26
[18] While he was thus speaking to them, behold, a ruler came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died; but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”
[19] And Jesus rose and followed him, with his disciples.
[20] And behold, a woman who had suffered from a hemorrhage for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment;
[21] for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I shall be made well.”
[22] Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well.
[23] And when Jesus came to the ruler’s house, and saw the flute players, and the crowd making a tumult,
[24] he said, “Depart; for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him.
[25] But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose.
[26] And the report of this went through all that district.
Mark 3:20-30
[20] and the crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat.
[21] And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for people were saying, “He is beside himself.”
[22] And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Be-el’zebul, and by the prince of demons he casts out the demons.”
[23] And he called them to him, and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan?
[24] If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
[25] And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.
[26] And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end.
[27] But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man; then indeed he may plunder his house.
[28] “Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter;
[29] but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin” —
[30] for they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.”
