Isaiah 33:2-6
[2] O LORD, be gracious to us; we wait for thee.
Be our arm every morning,
our salvation in the time of trouble.
[3] At the thunderous noise peoples flee,
at the lifting up of thyself nations are scattered;
[4] and spoil is gathered as the caterpillar gathers;
as locusts leap, men leap upon it.
[5] The LORD is exalted, for he dwells on high;
he will fill Zion with justice and righteousness;
[6] and he will be the stability of your times,
abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge;
the fear of the LORD is his treasure.
Acts 17:16-34
[16] Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols.
[17] So he argued in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the market place every day with those who chanced to be there.
[18] Some also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers met him. And some said, “What would this babbler say?” Others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities” — because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.
[19] And they took hold of him and brought him to the Are-op’agus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is which you present?
[20] For you bring some strange things to our ears; we wish to know therefore what these things mean.”
[21] Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new.
[22] So Paul, standing in the middle of the Are-op’agus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious.
[23] For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, `To an unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.
[24] The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by man,
[25] nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all men life and breath and everything.
[26] And he made from one every nation of men to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their habitation,
[27] that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel after him and find him. Yet he is not far from each one of us,
[28] for `In him we live and move and have our being’;
as even some of your poets have said, `For we are indeed his offspring.’
[29] Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the Deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, a representation by the art and imagination of man.
[30] The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all men everywhere to repent,
[31] because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all men by raising him from the dead.”
[32] Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; but others said, “We will hear you again about this.”
[33] So Paul went out from among them.
[34] But some men joined him and believed, among them Dionys’ius the Are-op’agite and a woman named Dam’aris and others with them.
II Thessalonians 1:1-12
[1] Paul, Silva’nus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalo’nians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:
[2] Grace to you and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
[3] We are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, as is fitting, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing.
[4] Therefore we ourselves boast of you in the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions which you are enduring.
[5] This is evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be made worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering —
[6] since indeed God deems it just to repay with affliction those who afflict you,
[7] and to grant rest with us to you who are afflicted, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire,
[8] inflicting vengeance upon those who do not know God and upon those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
[9] They shall suffer the punishment of eternal destruction and exclusion from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,
[10] when he comes on that day to be glorified in his saints, and to be marveled at in all who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed.
[11] To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his call, and may fulfil every good resolve and work of faith by his power,
[12] so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Luke 10:1-7
[1] After this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to come.
[2] And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.
[3] Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.
[4] Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and salute no one on the road.
[5] Whatever house you enter, first say, `Peace be to this house!’
[6] And if a son of peace is there, your peace shall rest upon him; but if not, it shall return to you.
[7] And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages; do not go from house to house.
