Second Day of the Fast of the Holy Cross
II Corinthians 8:16-24
II Corinthians 8:16-24
But thanks be to God who puts the same earnest care for you into the heart of Titus.
For he not only accepted our appeal, but being himself very earnest he is going to you of his own accord.
 With him we are sending the brother who is famous among all the churches for his preaching of the gospel;
and not only that, but he has been appointed by the churches to travel with us in this gracious work which we are carrying on, for the glory of the Lord and to show our good will.
We intend that no one should blame us about this liberal gift which we are administering,
for we aim at what is honorable not only in the Lord’s sight but also in the sight of men.
And with them we are sending our brother whom we have often tested and found earnest in many matters, but who is now more earnest than ever because of his great confidence in you.
As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker in your service; and as for our brethren, they are messengers of the churches, the glory of Christ.
So give proof, before the churches, of your love and of our boasting about you to these men.
And he sent them away; and immediately he got into the boat with his disciples, and went to the district of Dalmanu’tha.
The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, to test him.
And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation.”
And he left them, and getting into the boat again he departed to the other side.
Now they had forgotten to bring bread; and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.
And he cautioned them, saying, “Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”
And they discussed it with one another, saying, “We have no bread.”
And being aware of it, Jesus said to them, “Why do you discuss the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened?
Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember?
When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.”
“And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.”
And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?”
