Many Armenian Proverbs are deeply rooted in the Biblical narrative. Others stem from the personal experiences of people. The lessons drawn have evolved into conventional wisdom and have become part of the Armenian folklore.
Here’s an example based on Matthew 5:8, one of the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount: Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Երանի̃ անոնց որ սրտով մաքուր են, վասնզի անոնք պիտի տեսնեն Աստուած: The Armenian proverb based on the New Testament verse is circulated among the people, to underscore the faith of those who believe without seeing the Lord:
Քրիստոս աչքով չտեսան, սրտով ճանչցան:
They didn’t see Christ with their eyes, they recognized him with their hearts.
