As we welcome the New Year and celebrate Armenian Christmas, it behooves us to revel in several Armenian poems by our illustrious literati that commemorate the most auspicious event and the coming year. Jacques Hagopian, Hovhannes Toumanian, Silva Gabudikian, Sybil, and Zahrad have written warmhearted verses infused with lyricism that permeate love, light, hope, and song, and pleasant wishes for a peaceful spirit and worry-free year. A poem by the prince of Armenian poetry Hovhannes Toumanian speaks of life, the heavens, nature and the mystery of the universe, and a whimsical poem by contemporary poet Zahrad is about the traditional, festive Armenian dessert, anooshaboor.

Let there be light! The Lord created Light and he saw that the light was good. And he separated the light from the darkness. St. Gregory was named the Illuminator, the Enlightener, for bringing the light of Christianity to Armenians. 12th century hymn, Առաւօտ Լուսոյ Aravod luso, literal translation “Morning of the Light” by St. Nerses Shnorhali, is one of the most beloved in the Armenian liturgy where we extol the glory of God.
