Not everyone is blessed with a life of flawless and unwavering health, nor have we been blessed with a temperament characterized by ideal proportions. Some individuals possess a cheerful and radiant personality, while others are naturally cautious and reserved. We are aware of people who have entered this world with a joyful spirit, while others seem to have already exhausted their potential and energy. Additionally, there are those who possess a spirit of initiative and stamina, who cannot bear the thought of idleness. Human society, with its remarkable diversity, flourishes like the beautiful garden described in the opening verses of the Bible.
In the sacrament of Baptism, we receive the fullness of sanctifying grace, and an equal and just abundance of faith, divine goodness that shines with hope, and the communion of God’s love.
In our physical lives, we strive for success with unwavering determination and sacrifice, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by future generations. But what about our spiritual lives? How do we fully realize the sanctifying grace of faith, hope, and love? How much effort do we invest in nurturing our abundant faith?
What steps do we take to share the radiant hope we have received? And above all, how do we infuse our human actions with the life-giving grace of God’s love, demonstrating our true identity as children of God?
Paul the Apostle draws a parallel between the spiritual life of a Christian and the athletes competing in the arena (1 Corinthians 9.24–27). Just as athletes strive to outperform their competitors to secure the coveted crown symbolizing their victory, Christians must diligently train themselves to excel in their spiritual pursuits. By doing so, they can ensure that they reach their ultimate goal and experience the fulfillment of their faith. In essence, the question arises: how can we effectively train ourselves to fully embrace and live out our spiritual lives, thereby making the most of the precious gift of eternal life bestowed upon us by God?
Our Lord Jesus demonstrated through His life’s example which were the most effective training exercises for the victorious athlete to secure the victory crown. These exercises are not exceptionally rigorous routines, nor are they attention-grabbing: they are simply acts of kindness towards our neighbors in need. For instance, giving a glass of fresh water to a thirsty person, praying frequently, and simply remembering and saying the name of our Lord Jesus every time our cell phones make their reminder noises—these are very important exercises.
We can elevate our minds to God in praise and thanksgiving every time we hear a car honking, sirens of an ambulance or fire truck tearing down the street; and soon, we will find ourselves thankful for all the noise around instead of getting annoyed.
Peace be with you at all times.
