Born of the Father

Saint Nersess Shnorhali emphasizes that the spiritual life of Christians is rooted in the understanding that we are not the origin of the light shining through us. Instead, this luminous light comes from the Only Begotten Word, whom the Father speaks within us.

This deep union is forged through Baptism, uniting every Christian, past and future, with the nature and character of Christ as members of His Body. This communion continually shapes us in God’s image because the only Son of the Father, through profound humility, emptied Himself, entered our limits, took on flesh, and was born into our material world. He became the Samaritan who, seeing our wounded nature, descended from His mount to heal our wounds. He gave us His Holy Spirit as medicine and sustenance to restore and sustain our health until His return, when He will pour out even greater grace on our healed nature and settle any remaining debts from our recovery.

Amidst the noise and chaos of the world, our spiritual foundation is built on humble silence. It is through silence that we learn to hear the voice of the Father speaking within us His Only Word and Son. As we grow in this new language, we become familiar with the Father’s invitation, learning His way of communication, understanding His thoughts and aims. This familiarity enables us to speak His Word—our Lord Jesus Christ—with our lives.

When we reach this level of Christian living, our Father will be pleased with us, and we will experience His protection and the Holy Spirit’s favor, filling us with His fruits. At that point, we will become like the tree of life, bearing fruits of life as our Lord Jesus expects from His disciples (Matthew 7.16-20).

In this silence of the school, we will discover our true self—the perfect image of God that the Heavenly Father painted on our human nature’s canvas. We will no longer be tempted to see ourselves as something we are not (Galatians 6.3), and we will speak solely the Word of God.

We enter the realm of the Spirit’s breath, where love knows no bounds or limits. In this space, we foster peace, embody patience and sweetness, stay true to the Path of Life and Truth, and extend kindness and friendliness to everyone. Ultimately, we achieve complete freedom, allowing us to follow the Holy Spirit, welcome His guidance, and rise toward the mystery of eternal Good—living and walking in the Spirit (Galatians 5.23, 25).
