The Nurture of the Soul
Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set his seal on him” (John. 6:26-27).
The people sought Jesus always, they followed him. Our Lord indeed has appeal, he has attraction. But what was Jesus’ appeal to people in the past, and what is his appeal to us today?
Today’s Gospel reading describes how people insatiably, constantly followed Jesus. But Jesus was not satisfied with his popularity alone and challenged the people who followed him to seek the fundamental and true reason of their attraction to himself. Despite his popularity Christ was not driven by populism. And as the Gospel shows, our Lord invited people to seek and to find the true reason for following him. Jesus expresses sorrow that those who seek him do so motivated only by their need to satisfy their physical hunger. But he gives much more. He offers much more. He satisfies the hunger of the soul. He offers the eternal bread.
The reality in our own days presents the same picture. Many are interested in the benefits that Christianity offers, but are rarely interested in the essence of the Christian faith. In light of today’s Gospel, we must ask ourselves “What attracts us to the Gospel, to the Church. Is it the external and temporary benefits, or is it the eternal values. The words of Christ echo in our ears today, “Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life.”
Come to church this Sunday and receive the food and drink that nurtures the soul. That is what which Jesus offers us eternally through the sacrament of Holy Eucharist. Come and share his holy Body and precious Blood.
May the Lord bless you and your family.
