Ascension
In his sermon on the Holy Spirit, St. Basil of Caesarea says that it is not enough for the Christian disciple to imitate his Lord Jesus Christ, becoming like him meek, humble and good; as a true disciple, the Christian must die with the Lord to rise with Him.
In the sacrament of baptism, the Christian dies with the Lord Jesus, writes Paul the Apostle to the Romans (6.4) and to the Colossians (2.12). It is through this sacramental faith that the Christian receives from the Father the grace of justification (Philippians 3.9), which effectively plants in us the seed of the Resurrection of our Lord (Philippians 3.10).
St. Athanasius, bishop of Alexandria in Egypt, each year would communicate the correct date of Easter in a pastoral letter to his suffragan bishops. He took the opportunity to offer meditation and instruction about the very important graces we received through our faith in Christ. In these letters, Athanasius contemplates the resurrection of Jesus as a constant revelation of the Word of God, an uninterrupted visit of the Father healing creation from the ills of evil by anointing us in his own justice.
God is the supreme good, and by nature communes with his creature. St. Gregory the Illuminator explains in his Reiterative Sermons (Teaching of Armenian Church Fathers, 7.102) that no one can incapacitate this power giving us our eternal happiness, except we ourselves, because we have been created in the image of God with intellect and free will.
Every Christian receives this great gift in the sacrament of Baptism as a seed, and the ownership of this perfection is brought to fruition when we open our souls to the Heavenly Father, the good vinedresser, and allow Him to make his divine justice grow and bear fruit in us. Let us open our souls and minds to receive the powers of the Holy Spirit and become witnesses (Acts 1.8) not only on this earthly Jerusalem, but as true worshipers of the Most Holy Trinity in the Church, the atrium of the heavenly Jerusalem, the City of God. The true and fulfilling happiness consists precisely in this joy, the most beautiful prize of the Lord’s Resurrection.
The Christian has twice the responsibility to live up to the calling of grace, because, first, he is the image of God as His creature, and, second, he became the image of the Word of God become flesh in the sacrament of Baptism.
Maran atha! Come, Lord! Let us open our souls to the visitation of God, so that He may remain with us and in us. Let us co-operate with our Lord Jesus, so that He may be able to accomplish His promise that He is with us until the end of the world (Matthew 28.20).
