Tradition and Traditionalism
We all have traditions, national and church traditions, family traditions, that are handed down to us from the past, and which we want to keep and pass on to our children and grandchildren, the next generations. How valuable are church traditions in this heritage?
Yesterday, the eighth day of the Feast of Nativity, was the Feast of the Naming and Circumcision of our Lord, about which we read in in the Gospel of Luke: “And when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the Child, his name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb” (2:21).
St. Paul rejects circumcision considering it an obstacle to the saving grace of the Gospel. Yet Jesus himself observed and kept all the traditions of the Mosaic Law. Is there a contradiction here? Not necessarily. The value of tradition is in the value the observer gives to it, in the conscious valuation of the tradition. But that same tradition loses its value when it becomes dead letter and loses its meaning and evocative influence, turns into traditionalism, tradition for the sake of tradition, detached from its sense, its roots. keeps us linked to our own past, to our ancestors. This is even more true in the observance of our faith traditions. This is just as true and even more so in the case of religious traditions. Jesus desired to stay connected to the spiritual heritage of Israel. He said: “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill” (Mt 5:17). Jesus came as a new creator of the values of life, but he never was a revolutionary. St. Paul had penetrated the essence of the teaching of Jesus, that however valuable traditions are they must be challenged if and when they are so hardened that they obstruct the spiritual nurture and growth of God’s people. Traditions observed without conscious awareness of their spiritual value fail to connect us to the heritage of our Christian faith, and block our spiritual nurture rather than nurture and expand it. The Orthodox theologian Jaroslav Pelikan (1923-2006) has summarized this best: “Tradition is the living faith of the dead; traditionalism is the dead faith of the living.”
We are the heirs of a rich heritage of traditions. And we must maintain these traditions alive, consciously and always anchored in the faith of our ancestors. And we must, at all costs, avoid senseless traditionalism. May the living traditions of our forebears live and find their meaningful expressions in our lives.
Come to church this Sunday and let us together celebrate the greatest tradition of our Christian faith by partaking in the holy Body and precious Blood or our Lord.
May the Lord bless you and your loved ones.
